Introduction to Tek-Blog

Welcome to the new Tektrim Blog.  Please allow me to introduce you to Tektrim, the blog, my partner and myself.  My name is Jeff Freeman and along with my partner, Alan Graybill, we are the founders of Tektrim.

Those of you who know us know that we have both had long careers in the custom home building industry. So why (on earth?) would we want to start making and selling construction products? For one simple reason – we have spent many years working on how to do contemporary details.

We want to share some of our products and systems that can help architects, contractors and designers get magnificent results, every time, when they are doing these kinds of details.

Tektrim is dedicated to our byline: “Modern Details Made Easy”. We offer products that can enhance many contemporary designs. We seek to aid those creating structures with clean lines and uncluttered palettes. That being said, neither of us feels that we, in any way, have any lock on what constitutes “contemporary”, “modern”, or for that matter, “good” design. But we do feel that we can bring our technical experience into play when developing new products and systems for contemporary construction detailing.

The Mission Statement for the Blog

The purpose of the blog is to evolve the conversation about modern details and to hopefully generate some new ideas and open possibilities for new growth. We would love to hear about your design challenges – what you want to do or have tried to do but encountered some difficulty or trade resistance. Or maybe you are afraid to do a new detail feeling it is just not worth the “fight” to get it to happen.  Or there is the possibility that the detail will just not work well… Well, we are here to discuss that and to find ways that it can work.

The above comments have the potential to unleash a torrent of topics and discussions.  Like any useful blog we will need to stay close to our proposed topic, but we welcome suggestions for additional topics. I am not sure yet if we will start new thread immediately or cue up for the next topic – we will see how it develops…

Flush and Recessed Base Details

The first topic we will discuss is flush and recess base details. This is a topic dear to our hearts and eyes! This is one of those details that will set a project off like almost no other. The concurrent risk is, that poorly executed, it will make you want to cringe! So, that said, we want to open it up for discussion…

Here are some potential areas to discuss:

1 – Design issues: height of base, flush or recessed, how to go up and down stairs, how to join (or not) to other elements, what happens at windows and door jambs, how to join or address vertically oriented details such as reveals and shadow lines. Changes in materials and changes in surface planes.
